And we can see why, as we joined the rest of the audience leaving their seats to give the performers in Wicked a well-deserved round of applause and a few whistles.
One of the main reasons for this response, I think, was the incredible vocals from Emma Hatton who plays Ephaba – aka the Wicked Witch of the West. Her voice was so powerful and clean, her finale notes nearly blew us out of our seats.
Also, Savannah Stevenson who played Glinda the Good Witch provided plenty of humour, the costumes were out of this world, and the dancing skills bewitching.
The story line was clever, telling audiences things were not all they seem in the good vs bad world of Oz, although it’s easy to lose the meaning of certain references if you haven’t seen the Wizard of Oz before (worth a watch before you go).
Our only criticisms are the songs – although extraordinarily sung – aren’t catchy enough to be memorable, except perhaps the impressive first-half finale ballad, Defying Gravity.
Overall though, Wicked will cast its spell on you and you will be sure to defy gravity as you lift from your seat to give them a well-deserved standing ovation.
