No12 – Salenko scores five (1994)

In 1994, Russian striker Oleg Salenko scored five goals against Cameroon in the group stage setting a record for most goals in a World Cup match that still stands today.

Salenko shared the Golden Boot with Hristo Stoitchkov – remarkable given Russia didn’t make it into the knock-out stage.

Salenko played only nine international matches, including one for Ukraine, and didn’t score at that level before or after the World Cup. He did, however, go on to manage Ukraine’s beach football side.
