No8 – The Cruyff turn makes its debut (1974)

Dutch superstar Johan Cruyff was immortalised in having this brilliant trick of evasion named after him. It was first sighted against Sweden in the 1974 tournament when, with few options and a defender on his back, Cruyff shimmies one way, before tapping the ball back between his legs, leaving the wrong-footed defender flailing. With the Dutch brand of Total Football was dominant that year, Cruyff was named player of the tournament, although the Netherlands fell 2-1 to West Germany in the final.
