No9 – England get done by the Germans on penalties (1990)

England’s best performance in a World Cup since they won back in 1966 came in 1990, when they made it to the semi-finals before losing to Germany. After falling behind to a freak goal from Andreas Brehme, England equalised through Gary Lineker, who beat two German defenders to score a famous goal with ten minutes remaining. Neither team could break the deadlock, but Germany prevailed on penalties and went on to beat Argentina in the final. It also began the English tradition of losing on penalties in big games to Germany.
