Jenna Talackova (pictured above right in 2010) was born a male, which precluded her from the competition as its rules require contestants to be “naturally born females”.

General outrage at her disqualification ensued and, a quick LA press conference later with Jenna and a lawyer, the Miss Universe Organisation backtracked, allowing her to enter provided that she met all the “legal gender recognition requirements” of Canada.

Miss Talackova began hormone therapy at 14 and changed her sex at 19, four years ago.

“I regard myself as a woman with a history,” she said.
