It continued as a roadshow festival through North America on and off until 2004, when it settled in Chicago’s Grant Park. Spin-off fests now also take place in Brazil and Chile, and an Israel event is planned for next year.

Do it bceause: If three days isn’t enough, or you missed some bands you wanted to catch, spend a week in Chicago afterwards. There are a whole raft of official Lollapalooza aftershows – gigs by the same performers but in more intimate gig venues around town.

When you’re not rocking out, hit Chow Town, the festival’s mega food market, or take a stroll down eco-centre Green Street.
