The quake struck 23 miles down in the Pacific Ocean approximately 285 miles from the Japanese capital of Tokyo.
Buildings across the region of Miyagi Prefecture, devastated by the March 11 quake in 2011, were shaken by the initial earthquake.

The March 11 quake lead to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
