But that’s exactly what happened in Lancaster, Ohio – where police say an instructor at an Ohio gun safety class accidentally shot a student.

73-year-old Terry J. Dunlap Sr. was showing students how to use a handgun at the training facility on Saturday when he fired a bullet that ricocheted off a desk and straight into the arm of 26-year-old Michael Piemonte.

Piemonte says the .38-caliber bullet hit him between his elbow and armpit. Luckily some of the other students at the training were nurses and were able to stabilize him before he was taken to a Columbus hospital. Phew.

It would seem that Dunlap didn’t realize the gun was loaded, which I’m pretty sure is one of the first lessons in gun safety – checking that the gun isn’t loaded.

I’m sure all those students have learned a valuable lesson in gun safety.

Police have listed the shooting as accidental.
