The whopping figure that surprised experts was stumped up by Fundacion Museo De La Moda, a Chilean private fashion museum, who beat out fierce competition for the item from a number of bidders both in the room and on the phone.
The dress had been designed in 2006 by Disaya, a graduate of London art school Central Saint Martins, who loaned it to Winehouse for the shoot. The dress was donated to Kerry Taylor Auctions of south London earlier this month.
Proceeds from the expectation–shattering sale will go to The Amy Winehouse Foundation, set up in the wake of the singer’s passing to help vulnerable young women.
“I can’t put into words how grateful I am to Kerry and Disaya for their support and hard work,” Mitch Winehouse, Winehouse’s father, said of the auction.
“We are over the moon, and this is a wonderful start to the foundation.”
Other dresses and items that went on sale at the auction included duplicates of the Emanuel wedding gown and shoes worn by Princess Diana, which went for £48,000 and £36,000 a piece, as well as an Elizabeth Taylor dress from 1964 which sold for no less than £31,000 too.
