Wikileaks supporters rally behind Julian Assange in Australia
Wikileaks supporters have demonstrated across Australia, against the arrest of Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblowing website.
Around 500 protestors gathered in Sydney today demanding the release of Assange, who is in a British jail fighting extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.
They are angry he was arrested after voicing the truth.
Protestors also staged a rally in Brisbane, calling on the Australian government to respect freedom of expression.
Officials in Washington, America, are enraged over the publication on Wikileaks of secret diplomatic US cables. The site continues to post new leaks and has promised 250,000 in total.
They argue that the publication of cables is irresponsible and could put their national security at risk.
Assange, who is an Australian citizen, is waiting to hear whether or not he will be extradited to Sweden to face the courts about a number of allegations of sexual crimes made against him in that country.
The Sydney protestors also condemned the Australian government, describing its stance on the issue “utterly outrageous”.
The government has been embroiled in the scandals, with the latest batch of leaked cables revealing that Kevin Rudd, the foreign minister, derided the contributions of France and Germany in Afghanistan.
The Australian newspaper, reported a barb from Rudd who likened the European fight against the Taliban to “organising folk-dancing festivals”.
