England were either patient or gutless on day one, depending on who you’re listening to, limping to four for 164, the total they started on today.

Skipper Brendan McCullum gave the new ball to Southee straight away and an hour later he got the day’s first wicket, Joe Root (40), an innocuous edge down leg side caught by keeper  BJ Watling.

Straight away they claimed England’s cricketer of the year, Matt Prior, who reviewed an LBW decision which stood.

Stuart Broad survived a loose hat-trick ball from Southee but was soon gone, also LBW but this time plumb as you like, to the bowling of Wagner. As Phil Tuffnell said on Test Match Special, “That was absolutely stone dead”

That made it seven for 195.

The experienced Graeme Swann, who can bat a bit, was also no good – he was soon caught behind for five from Wagner again.

Jonny Bairstow, 23, is now left to resurrect the innings with Steve Finn and numpty James Anderson after him.

England have their backs to the wall big time.
