The mayor of the capital's central Cankaya district, Bulent Tanik, told reporters that no one was killed in the explosion, but three people had been seriously injured.

It is reported that the blast was targeted at Cankaya district administration offices, blowing out the windows of buildings in the surrounding area and sparking a fire.

There has as yet been no claim of responsibility.

According to CNN-Turk TV, the blast originated on a minibus. TV station NTV has also reported that 10 people have been hospitalised. The three seriously injured people are said to have possibly lost their limbs.

The bomb went off near a secondary school but no students have been hurt, according to Tanik.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office said: “We are closely monitoring the situation and are in touch with the Turkish authorities to establish the latest information.”
