What does your job entail?

My job covers all aspects running the restaurant, from writing the menus, purchasing, sorting menu costings and recruitment and development of our team.

What’s the best bit?

The best parts of the job are either seeing someone really enjoy themselves while dining in the restaurant and also using different ingredients which aren’t so readily available in New Zealand.

And the worst?

The worst is probably the unsociable hours, but that also leads to having a close knit relationship with the people you work with, so it’s not all bad!

How did you get your job?

I went through an agency who recommended The Henry Root to me.

What qualifications/experience do you need?

To work in a kitchen you need to have a love for food and a lot of common sense. Experience plays a big part but a good work ethic is preferable to experience sometimes!

What advice would you give someone who would like a job such as yours?

Always volunteer to do any jobs you haven’t done before – the more you know the quicker you progress. Also, write every recipe down you use. It will come in handy a few years down the track…
