Dougie, a male Bactrian camel, chased after white rhino Marashe, when the pointy nosed beast came too close to Dougie’s young, one-month old daughter Nikki.
Bactrian camels are reportedly an endangered species and Nikki is one of only three babies ever born at Longleat.
The African White rhino is also and endangered species, but that didn’t stop Dougie from turning violent when one approached his daughter.
According to the UK’s Daily Telegraph at the approach of Marashe, Dougie began to foam at the mouth and chased the three ton rhino away with bites.
“Marashe was being a bit too inquisitive around the new arrival and Dougie wasn’t put off by her size or 15 inch long horn and decided to chase after her,” said Ian Turner, a keeper at the park.
“I’m not sure what the camel would have done had the rhino actually stopped and stood her ground. But Marashe seems to have learnt her lesson and is giving all the camels a wide berth at the time.”
Seems that you really don’t want to mess with a camel when it has got the hump… In the case of a Bactrian, two of them.
