On the same day that the news broke that Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson will retire this summer, word also emerged that striker Wayne Rooney had asked two weeks ago to leave the club this summer.
A club spokesperson responded by saying that Rooney is “not for sale”.
Rooney and Moyes have a colourful history. Rooney played under the Scot at Everton, his boyhood club, before he left in 2004 for Manchester United.
However, Moyes received libel damages in 2008 for claims made in Rooney’s autobiography about the pair’s relationship and history at the Merseyside club.
United are expected to make an announcement about their new manager in the next 36 hours.
