The modified Lotus Elige was driven by 21-year old Nick Ponting at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire where it broke the speed record for an electric car.
Ecotricity, the company responsible for the modifications to the car, told The Guardian of the successful record breaking attempt: “[ We built the Nemesis to] stimulate thought and debate about how we’ll be getting around when the world runs out of oil. And what we’ve been able to demonstrate is that wind-powered cars are just not feasible, but can be a load of fun.”
“We made a number of modifications to the road-legal specification of the car to vive it more down force at higher speed.”
The previous record of 137mph had been set by Don Wales, the son of legendary motorsport and landspeed record holder Sir Malcolm Campbell.
