The Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), an organisation which targets foreigners, is not allowed to spy on people from New Zealand, and Dotcom was protected from this kind of surveillance.
Prime Minister John Key, made a personal apology to the online tycoon who founded Megaupload, following a raid on Dotcom’s Coatesville mansion early this year:
“If things had been done properly it would have been quite clear [Dotcom] was protected,” said Prime Minister Key.
In January this year Dotcom was arrested after the police barged in to his rented mansion.
The GCSB claim that they were told by a third party that Dotcom was a foreign national. The Prime Minister explained that it was “human error. ” The PM continued: “They have let themselves down. They have let New Zealand down.
“If they had done their job properly they should have worked it out,” Key said.
“Of course I apologise to Mr Dotcom. I apologise to New Zealand.”
