Last week, the snow was fabulous in France. Our snow blogger in Tignes, Piste Addict, had a superb day last Thursday skiing in knee-deep powder. Some recompense, perhaps, for the fact that his skis were nicked a couple of weeks ago.
Since then, however, there’s been no new snow, and there won’t be much this week, either. Temperatures are creeping up in the sunshine too, so you’ll need to aim high and ski the north-facing slopes for the best conditions – either that, or follow the sun around the resort, hitting the slopes after they’ve been in the sun for around 30 minutes, and the icy surface has softened.
In fact, in the valleys, it’s going to be very warm: Meteo Chamonix, predicts +15C in the lower valleys this week, and a freezing level up to 2500m by Wednesday. Fortunately, temperatures will drop back on Thursday.
Currently, above Chamonix, the Grands Montets area has 175cm of snow on the lower slopes, and 385cm higher up. The last fresh snow there was on Wednesday.
Further south, Alpe d’Huez has clear skies and 139cm at the bottom of the gondolas and 165cm at the top of the Pic Blanc cable-car. Temperatures of +4C are expected, so expect the lower slopes to be slushy by the time the lifts close.
