Trekkie and director of the New York Asian Film Festival Daniel Craft, 41, was allowed to see a working cut of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness after a friend launched an internet campaign, but then died shortly afterwards.
A statement on the New York Asian Film Fest’s website reads: “Last night around 10.15pm [January 4] Dan Craft, who has been member of Subway Cinema since 2004, passed away. His wife and brother were with him when he went, and he wasn’t in any pain.”
Craft had gone to see The Hobbit, to view the nine-minute teaser for the new Trek film that runs before it, but the cinema he went to did not run this particular trailer on this occasion.
A friend launched a campaign on Reddit for Craft to see the new trailer and this message made its way to the director of the new movie, JJ Abrams, who then arranged for Craft to see a special screening of a rough cut of the film.
Star Trek Into darkness is due for release this May and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Benedict Cumberbatch.
