Kim Kardashian is reportedly suing clothing retailer Old Navy £12m in damages because of an advertisement featuring her doppelganger Melissa Molinaro
The Old Navy "Super C-U-T-E" ad began airing in February and features 29-year-old singer-model Melissa Molinaro – who bears an uncanny resemblance to 30-year-old Kim Kardashian – singing, dancing and getting a manicure all while wearing Old Navy clothing. The ad quickly became a
Youtube sensation, no doubt partly because of Molinaro's likeness to Kim.
According to Us Weekly, Kardashian's lawsuit claims that the ad violates her publicity rights because viewers will mistakenly think that the reality star herself is endorsing Old Navy's clothes.
Kardashian, who is planning for her upcoming wedding to Kris Humphries, wants to stop the ads from playing and also wants to block Old Navy (and its parent company, the Gap Inc.) from using such a specific doppelganger in future ads.
Bizarrely, Reggie Bush, who used to date Kardashian, is currently seeing Molinaro. Maybe he can't tell the difference.
Extra is reporting that Kardashian is seeking a whopping $20 million in damages because she "has invested substantial time, energy, finances and entrepreneurial effort in developing her considerable professional and commercial achievements and success, as well as in developing her
popularity, fame, and prominence in the public eye."
An insider tells Us Weekly, "She's a businesswoman who has to protect her brand. Bottom line."
