Ann and Graham Smith made the lengthy journey from east Australia only to find they’d bought the tickets from a bogus website.
However, we needn’t all begin sobbing into our hankies – a generous donor who saw the couple’s story on the BBC website got in touch and offered his spare Olympic seats to the grateful Aussies.
Mrs Smith told the BBC after finding out that the tickets were fakes: “My husband’s just devastated – he was crying yesterday.”
But thanks to the mystery donor, Mr Smith was in better spirits today, telling the BBC that he was “overwhelmed by his generosity”.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, lives in Richmond.
What a thoroughly decent chap.
Of the moment the Aussie pair discovered their tickets were fake, Mrs Smith said: “When my sister called 118 for the contact number of the website we bought tickets from, they told us there was a note on the system saying it was a bogus ticketing website.
“The Olympics was the main reason for coming over.”
