The Guardian has reported that the parties, which attract up to 6,000 people each week and run until 10pm, have led to incidents such as people pouring beer over a tiger and drunkenly attempting to enter the lion enclosure.

One man was reported to have stripped off and tried to go for a swim in the penguin pool.

However, the zoo has rejected calls for the events to be booze-free, and believes that the majority of people can have fun with the animals without getting too close.

“We think the 225,000 visitors to Zoo Lates over the past five years have generally shown the respect for animals that we expect,” said a spokeswoman. “Very few exceptions have been shown the door.”
