It was a dramatic finish and a gutsy performance from McIlroy at a wet and rainy Valhalla.

The Northern Irishman saw his one-shot overnight lead wiped out on the front nine but regained control to see off challenges from Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson with a flawless back nine, finishing 16 under.

“I didn’t think in my wildest dreams I would have a summer like this,” the Open champion said, winning successive majors.

At 25, McIlroy is the third youngest player after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win four of golf’s biggest prizes.
