Gillard, who was recently replaced by Kevin Rudd in the lead up to the federal elections, will reportedly be called on to make appearances and speak publicly for the University.
It will be the first public role for the former prime minister, who led Australia from June 2010 when Rudd resigned, until June 2013 when Rudd regained power in a leadership spill.
Gillard is moving from her home in Melbourne to Adelaide.
