Thankfully, the lift wasn’t a death trap, but a clever 3D illusion created by an artist working for Alton Towers to celebrate their new scare ride Sub-Terra.
Luckily for us, they were also clever enough to film visitors’ terrified reactions.
“It’s not everyday you fall down a lift shaft while you’re out shopping,” said one shopper.
Well quite.
Head of consumer marketing at Alton Towers said: “We really wanted to test the limits of the Great British public.
“Nemesis Sub-Terra is by far the most terrifying of our attractions to date.”
