Turing was integral to the cracking of the Nazis’ Enigma code, but was convicted of gross indecency in 1952 for having a homosexual relationship.

“He led the team of Enigma codebreakers at [then Government Code and Cypher School in] Bletchley Park, which most historians agree shortened the Second World War,” the letter from the 11 scientists says.

“Yet successive governments seem incapable of forgiving his conviction for the then crime of being a homosexual, which led to his suicide, aged 41.”
